Spring, Early or Not, Brings Increased Risk of Floods

Craig Nutt, Punxsutawney Phil, Alphonse Mattia in PunxsutawneyPunxsutawney Phil and all the major groundhogs agree that spring will come early this year. While even the thought of an early spring is welcome after this particularly brutal winter, sudden freezes, snow thaws, and spring rains bring increased risk of flooding no matter where you live.

Even if your studio is covered by insurance, business insurance (like homeowner's insurance and renter's insurance) does not cover "rising water." Watch this interview with New Hampshire furniture maker Gary Spykman as he talks about his experiences with a flood in his studio, on the Studio Protector web site. Also, click on the link to the National Flood Insurance Program  to find out about your risks for floods and the cost of flood insurance. Contrary to popular belief, you do not have to live in a designated floodway to purchase flood insurance. Too many property owners find that out after their businesses or homes have flooded.

The site has more Artist-to-Artist Videos by Gary and by Russell Karkowski to help you think through what you would do if a flood was imminent. The Studio Protector web has a listing of Disaster Specific Planning Resources.
